Layne and Derek met in Raleigh, North Carolina in November 1998. They were married on July 29, 2000 and moved to Nashville, Tennessee.
After graduating from NC State in 1999, Derek completed his master's degree in geology at Vanderbilt in August, 2002 and his Ph.D. in environmental management through the Vanderbilt Center for Environmental Management Studies (VCEMS) in May, 2006. He is currently a consultant with Visual Risk Technologies, Inc. Layne graduated from Appalachian State in 1998 and completed her M.B.A. at Middle Tennessee State in August 2003. She is a coordinator in the Distance & Continuing Education Department at MTSU.
